He was tall dark and handsome. The most beautiful llama I had ever seen. I wanted him from the moment I laid eyes on him. But I didn't bring him home. He doesn't like dogs. Which can come in handy if the dog is an intruder but if the dog is my pet it is a problem. Apparently he never gets use to the dogs that live on the farm. And he has good reason. When he was a youngster, and in a pasture with other young llamas, a dog killed one of his buddies. The hatred of dogs runs deep and I can't hardly blame him.
My dogs have full access to all pastures so it would be dangerous for them to bring this boy home.
I was disappointed. He was so regal and handsome I could picture him in my pasture. But I did have a lovely chat with a very nice llama lady who was a wealth of llama information. She had been raising llamas for over 20 years. She told me that a female can guard just as well as a male so not to set my heart on a boy llama.
I appreciate her honesty, her love for her llamas, and concern for finding them just the right home.
I met a new friend today so the trip was successful.

Sorry it didn't work out, but it is best not to try and force a fit. A lady near me had a female llama that killed a coyote protecting their sheep. Lady llamas will definitely protect the flock also.
I hope you don't get a cranky llama. They are no fun!
Allow me to speak to the power (and strength) of a female guard llama. My Kai is magnificent and has stood up against stray dogs, coyotes and an unseen but very present cougar. It's funny, but I'm exactly the opposite of you - after having Kai, I'd never have anything other than a female guard llama. :-)
Perhaps you could return to the person who was looking for a home for her lady llama, then.
I agree with Danni. After watching Thelma and Louise round up the sheep and heard them to the barn while a stray dog was around I feel pretty good about my girls.
Ah, but the right one is out there. It is just a matter of time. Better to protect your dogs. Which reminds me - we haven't heard about your new little chihuahua girl in the longest time!
Tall, dark and handsome will find a home without dogs and be a happy boy.
I'm sorry that you fell in love so quickly. We sometimes don't see the behavior of an animal until they are in the yard with others. I'm glad the owner was honest.
There will be another...
