Moving On

The coyotes were howling last night on the hill just across the street from my farm. Time to get another llama.
We are in the process of looking for another guardian for our herd. Last week hubby came home all excited because he found me another llama. We hurried over to the nicest couple's house to look at Juniper. Now Juniper was a cutey but had no known guarding experience so I was a bit leery of taking her home. I wanted to take her just because I liked her owners so much but I wasn't ready.
I have heard that a gelded male is a better guardian even though I've known of some females that will do the job. I have my heart set on another male.
A friend emailed me with a name and email of a lady that had llamas and needed to find good homes for them. She was having a hard time letting go but found herself needing to find them a home in the next year. I contacted her and she had a gelded male that was known to be a guardian since the day he was born, was already in with goats and loved them, and was really handsome to boot. He is a lot taller than my little guy Koo but that might come in handy when fighting off coyotes and neighborhood dogs.
I am going tomorrow to meet him and her other llamas to see if it's a match. I'll take my camera so you can go with me.

Oh..thats exciting and encouraging news! Can't wait to see/meet the possible new addition. I just love Llamas and have wanted one for quite some time. I just know, it would tip the scales in the pasture right now. Some day...some day...

Much luck! I didn't realize that males were the stronger guardians. Do females, then, guard only their young?

I hope it turns out to be a good match. Of course there will always be a Koo shaped hole in your heart...

I can hardly wait to see how he looks. Hopefully, he'll be a good fit for your herd.

I hope he isn't cranky like our llama.

We have three llamas, and they are excellent guardians, despite the fact there are three. Our big male is gelded now, and guards his two girls and our flocks constantly. Even tonight he is on guard just outside the chicken yards... my husband just discovered him out there in the dark, head up, watching something. They are wonderful creatures, and I am so sorry for your loss of your lovely boy.

Wendy - It's been awhile since I have been able to check your blog and am just reading about your loss. I'm so sorry about Koo. This is one of the first blogs I started following and have always enjoyed your posts and appreciated your love for your animals. I'm also glad that you are looking for another llama. It never quite fills the hole completely but it's nice to have a new friend to learn to love. Take care.

I bet you couldn't sleep last night with anticipation. Do llamas need vet checks like horses? Don't settle - we've all done that, met an animal that needs a home and get it despite it not being the "right" one. They always fit in, somehow, but it's not like you can have more than one llama. You'll know!

Let me know if this lead doesn't work out. I can put you in touch with someone from a rescue group.
